Gahan Beacon Blonde Ale presents Don Ross LIVE at Penzie’s Bistro (Shaw’s Hotel) August 21st!

About this event

Don Ross began playing guitar virtually by accident.

There was always a lot of music around the house. Don’s dad is an operatically-trained singer. So, the Ross kids heard plenty of voice exercises around their Montreal home as well as classical music on the record player growing up (not to mention the occasional blast of the bagpipes when Don’s dad felt like waking up the neighbours with another musical skill he acquired growing up in Scotland!).

Don eventually studied Music at Toronto’s York University. Strangely enough, he didn’t focus on guitar but rather on composition, electronic music, and sound recording. Upon graduating, he had visions of being a composer of orchestral and electronic music or film scores..certainly not any delusions of playing solo guitar for a living. What changed his mind was seeing the success of musicians like Michael Hedges, Steve Reich and Keith Jarrett, player/composers who followed their musical intuitions wherever they led and who fell more into the category of “artist” rather than “guitarist” or “pianist.”

In 1988, Don became the first Canadian to win the U.S. National Fingerpick Guitar Championship. He won again in 1996, still the only two-time winner of the competition. He signed a recording deal with Toronto-based Duke Street Records and released three CDs for them between 1989 and 1993. He then recorded three CDs for Sony/Columbia between 1994 and 1997, and then three more for Milwaukee-based Narada Records between 1999 and 2003.

With the collapse of the conventional recording industry in the early 21st century, Don entered into a new venture with Milwaukee-based CandyRat Records and its founder, Rob Poland. The move to a completely internet-based model of releasing recordings resulted in the first ever CandyRat CD, 2005’s Music for Vacuuming. Don has released numerous CDs and DVDs for the new label, including his new album, A Million Brazilian Civilians, on CD and see-through orange vinyl. In 2019, Don released Don Ross Louder Than Usual, featuring his jazz quartet.

Don has toured regularly since 1989, across Canada, the USA, a dozen European countries, Japan, Taiwan, China, Australia, Russia and India. He has played with symphony orchestras in Canada and Germany, and collaborated live and on recording with U.S. guitarist Andy McKee, Canadian singer/guitarist Brooke Miller, Canadian guitarist Calum Graham, & Toronto bassist Jordan O’Connor. He also composes scores for television, radio and film, and does production and recording engineering for a variety of other musicians. In addition to acoustic guitar, Don also plays electric guitar, slide dobro and lapsteel guitar, harp guitar, voice, piano, keyboards, bass guitar and drums. He has just started learning to play the Kelstone, a 9-string guitar developed by Belgian musician/inventor Jan Van Kelst. At this point, Don admits that learning a new instrument from scratch at this point in his career is “humbling. I’m a rank amateur Kelstone player, and I still completely suck at it!”

Don Ross grew up in Montreal, has lived at various times in Ontario, Nova Scotia, the USA, China and Quebec, and now resides in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada.

Gahan Beacon Blonde Ale presents Logan Richard LIVE at Penzie’s Bistro (Shaw’s Hotel) August 26th!

About this event

Logan Richard may just be the Canadian East Coast’s answer to John Mayer, Bahamas, Theo Katzman and Colin James all rolled into one.

Spellbinding R&B grooves, pop hooks galore, a smooth voice that wraps you in, and tasteful blues-tinged guitar licks that make you realize why many are calling him one of the best up-and-coming young guitarists in the country: This is what you get upon catching one of Logan Richard’s live shows, or upon a spin of his recent self-titled EP.

With hundreds of thousands of listens on Spotify and airplay on CBC Radio 2, the East Coast Music Award nominee has garnered a dedicated legion of fans even at this early stage in his career, as his soundscape mix of pop, blues, R&B and indie rock pinpoints a creatively-crafted sound while it spans the genres.

Honing his frontman skills from a young age, belting blues music on stages for outdoor summer café diners on the streets of Charlottetown, PEI, Richard asserted himself on the Maritime blues music scene early on in his life. Continuing his steep career trajectory ascent since then, Richard released his successful debut EP called “The Split” in 2017, which escalated him to a headline slot at the TD Jazz/Blues Festival, and was nominated for Blues Recording of the Year at the 2019 ECMA’s.

The new self-titled eight-song EP produced by Adam Gallant toys with the roller coaster ride of being in love – falling out of it, not knowing how to let it go – with one of the highlight tracks being a co-write with Chris Kirby and Dave Sampson called Girlfriend Material.

As he has already shared the stage with many great Canadian acts, most recently having opened for Marianas Trench, Logan Richard stands poised to strongly stride onward along the musical road that lies ahead for him. But, he also has one other thing going for him, which, if you get the lucky chance to talk to the guy, you’ll come to know it: He may also just be one of the nicest dudes you’ll ever meet.

Gahan Beacon Blonde Ale presents Dan Doiron LIVE at Penzie’s Bistro (Shaw’s Hotel) July 10th!

About this event

Friends say they don’t recognize him without a guitar strapped on, as Dan Doiron has been addicted to the raw energy of the guitar since he formed his first band at age 13 in Port Hood, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. An inventive guitarist, Dan fuses potent guitar riffs and grooves with unique lyrics reflecting his views on everyday life, ensuring an emotional, thrilling musical ride at every band and solo show. He’s profoundly committed to the music, crafting his own style that draws upon over forty years of his traditional and modern guitar studies and experiences as a musician, songwriter, music educator, (B.MUS.Ed from Dalhousie University with a major in classical guitar), National guitar clinician, (Roland Canada), and recording engineer. Dan is also dedicated to sharing that passion and knowledge and has developed a diverse variety of workshops and clinics that focus on guitar technique and improvisation, songwriting, and incorporating technology to assist musical growth. He’s experienced in presenting to all ages and levels and especially enjoys the opportunity to inspire the next generation of musicians through “Blues in Schools” presentations.

After many years as a sideman, in 2011 Dan stepped out as a solo recording artist, earning both East Coast Music Award and Music Nova Scotia nominations for his debut CD, “Even My Guitar Is In Love With You”. A torrential body of multi award nominated work has followed and in May 2018 he released his fourth album “Livin’ Centre Stage”. This album won the 2018 Music Nova Scotia Award, and has been nominated for a 2019 East Coast Music Award for Blues Album of the Year and “Live Centre Stage,” is also the credo of his award winning 2018 Start Up Canada initiative to inspire others to live their passion regardless of age or stage in life. Find more information about the program at www.LiveCentreStage.com In October 2017 Dan and his band won the East Coast Blues Society’s “Maritimes to Memphis” competition for a second time, awarding them the honour of representing Atlantic Canada once again at the worlds’ largest Blues competition, the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis.
