Gahan Beacon Blonde Ale presents Christina Martin LIVE at Penzie’s Bistro (Shaw’s Hotel) July 22nd!
About this event
They say the mark of fine songwriting is when a song feels like an old favourite on the first listen. With Christina Martin, you can find an album full of tracks that feel like time-treasured classics, and brand new singles that feel like the song you got married to. Sharp as a razor and shining like silver, her songs blend the relatable and personal, painting portraits of love, loss, tragedy and redemption to soul-stirring effect. Her music dances effortlessly through Pop, Rock, Folk and Americana traditions but stays deftly unchained by any one label, refusing to be pigeon-holed and unafraid to dip into stranger waters. The hooks hook, the hits hit hard, the words stop you dead and the music demands to be heard. Seven albums in with an eighth on the way, Christina Martin’s music is there for anyone who’s felt up against impossible odds, yet refused to lie down.

Gahan Beacon Blonde Ale presents Songwriter’s Circle: Lawrence Maxwell, Nick Doneff, & Shane Pendergast July 27th!
About this event
Shane Pendergast is a folksinger from Tracadie Cross, Prince Edward Island. He learned to play by ear at an early age, immersed in a culture of family kitchen parties. Shane’s connection to Maritime folk music dates back to the efforts of his great-grandparents, preservers of folklore in P.E.I. Shane is carrying the torch forward with his own songs of Maritime lore and life experiences. Shane is known as an old-school troubadour, and “might just become the East Coast’s de facto King of Folk.” (The East). His 2021 album “Second Wind” won Contemporary Roots Album of the Year at the Music PEI Awards.
Nick’s sophomore recording, The Late August Days, is out now! The 9-song album features contributions from Jim Creeggan (Barenaked Ladies), Catherine MacLellan, Mickey Raphael (Willie Nelson), Dave Haskett (Shawn Mendes), Blair Packham (The Jitters), Aaron Comeau (Skydiggers), and more!
Maxwell hails from Prince Edward Island, Canada’s smallest province but one with a rich country music history based in every citizen’s relationship to the land and sea. In fact, before launching his musical career, Maxwell served in the Royal Canadian Navy upon graduating high school where, during downtime aboard his warship, he would compose thoughts that would lay the groundwork for his 2018 debut album Not Your Outlaw.

About this event
From the sounds of slapback echo, twangy Telecasters and swooning pedal steel, it’s clear that Scott MacKay has an affinity for country music of the 1950s and ‘60s. But the singer/songwriter from Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island also has a sharp wit that shines through on the 10 original songs that comprise his latest album Stupid Cupid, a collection that offers a fresh, modern take on classic country.

Gahan Beacon Blonde Ale presents J.P. Cormier LIVE at Penzie’s Bistro (Shaw’s Hotel) August 14th!
About this event
Nobody really knows who J.P. Cormier is for sure. That’s to be expected, believe me. In 1974 he was a five year old boy, discovering an innate talent for playing the guitar, I had a little hand in that, guiding him through the beginning stages. He learned faster than I could teach. By the mid eighties, not out of his teens, he was a sideman for bands and artists of many different genres in Alabama, Tennessee, Mississippi, and all across the deep south. As he travelled and worked he added more and more instruments to his arsenal of capabilities. He became indispensable to the bands he worked for. In the early Nineties, he became a sideman for one of Canada’s favourite sons, Stompin’ Tom Connors and also became a staple of the recordings at Studio H in Halifax. His work with the CBC there, spanned musical, production and arranging duties. All this before he was 20. In the mid nineties he reentered the musical scene of his beloved East Coast and the Island called Cape Breton. He exploded onto the trad music scene there as a fiddler, performing some of the most difficult music ever produced by legends like Winston Fitzgerald and Angus Chisholm with a facility that stunned onlookers. Especially those who knew he wasn’t born there, but born in Ontario to Cape Breton parents. Somehow, some way, his music was the real thing, sounding like he had been steeped continually in a handed-down brew of family tradition from the old country. Nothing could be further from the truth. His previous gig was in Nashville playing mandolin and banjo in a grammy nominated bluegrass gospel band and performing on the Opry, and playing television shows with the likes of Waylon Jennings. All those people also thought he was one of them, American, reared in the ways of bluegrass, old time and Americana music. They knew he was from Canada, but it just didn’t seem possible. Then in 1997, something amazing happened. An album released in Canada, out of nowhere, called Another Morning. This time it was him as a songwriter and a lead singer. And what a songwriter he turned out to be. Some of the performances on that album are literally part of the musical vocabulary today in the East Coast. Songs like the title cut, and Kelly’s Mountain, The Molly May (co written with his cousin Gervais) and others. It inspired, 25 years ago, some of the biggest names in the business today. People like Dave Gunning, Matt Andersen, David Myles, Joel Plaskett, all of which will tell you: that record changed things.
The Canadian industry thought so too, and it received a juno nomination and won an ECMA.
And that was just the beginning.

Gahan Beacon Blonde Ale presents Jackie Putnam LIVE at Penzie’s Bistro (Shaw’s Hotel) August 25th!
About this event
Jackie is a Canadian Singer-Songwriter from Debert, Nova Scotia bringing together the sounds of country, rock, and pop. This dynamic powerhouse singer performs throughout the Atlantic Provinces as a one-woman show and with a band. Jackie is influenced by Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, Patty Loveless, Bonnie Tyler, Pat Benatar and Canadian’s Anne Murray and Shania Twain.
Jackie became inspired at the age of 12 from watching the movie, “Coal Miner’s Daughter”. This movie had a huge influence on Jackie’s music career at such an early age where Loretta Lynn became her idol and Jackie taught herself how to play guitar and began writing music.
Throughout Jackie’s mid 20s, she began performing solo, singing hit songs by the Queens of Country. Jackie then fronted the band Nighthawk, adding 50s and 60s music to her show while she performed traditional country music. Jackie later fronted bands such as Sierra; Sweet Revenge; Eldorado, and has shared the stage with Rawlins Cross, Cindy Church, Doris Mason, and the Kilted Chef. Jackie has also performed on CTV’s Christmas Daddies, Breakfast Television, The Downeaster Jamboree Show, and local cable shows.
During the two-year pandemic, Jackie released her first song that she recorded as an online tribute to the Province of Nova Scotia shortly after the April 18th–19th, 2020 Colchester County tragedies. “I’ll Be Right Home To You” received radio airplay and was written by Bob Robichaud. This song was going to be featured in a March 2020 showcase in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee, USA, which was cancelled due to the pandemic.
In 2021, Jackie performed at Atlantic Canada’s First Ever Historic Tour for the Professional Women’s Hockey Players Association game that was held in Nova Scotia at Truro’s Rath Eastlink Civic Centre. Jackie sang the bilingual version of our Canadian National Anthem at the Opening Ceremonies and performed her one woman show for three days.
Jackie is now working on recording her debut EP The Phoenix and is continuing to focus on writing and releasing new singles to showcase her dynamic range.
